Distinguishing Primary and Secondary, Upholding the Fundamental: Confucian Wisdom Defines the Core Dividing Line of Human-AI Symbiosis
This essay is rooted in Confucian thought. Confucianism emphasizes propriety, choice, and perpetual renewal. The core connotation of choice and reserve lies in distinguishing priorities and anchoring what is fundamental. All things in the world cannot expand infinitely or be filled exhaustively. Only by clarifying what constitutes the core subject and what are secondary details, prioritizing the preservation of the fundamental origin, and moderately setting aside trivial redundancies can we travel far and steadily. This Eastern wisdom of weighing priorities and sorting primary and secondary matters marks the most essential, insurmountable dividing line between human consciousness and artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence excels at flawless replication, massive computation, and enumerating details. It can lay out all information without omission and present every detail equally, yet it lacks the autonomous awareness to distinguish primary essence from secondary interference. The uniquely human capacity to choose, reserve, and discriminate stems from the Confucian balancing wisdom of “going too far is as bad as not going far enough” and the civilizational core of “perpetual renewal”.
Humans and AI are not locked in a zero-sum game of mutual exclusion, but a symbiotic relationship of mutual complementation, each bringing its strengths to bear. AI carries instrumental value in precise replication, logical deduction, and detail filling; humans hold the core value of overall judgment, priority screening, and safeguarding the essence. Based on this Confucian logic of deliberation, we can dispel the contemporary anxiety that AI will replace humanity: humans possess spiritual awareness and value judgment that machines cannot replicate, and civilization has a foundational root for enduring continuity — humanity will never become extinct.
This essay takes life-or-death decisions in clinical medicine as practical evidence, supported by creative philosophies of Eastern and Western aesthetics, to progressively verify the essence of human-AI symbiosis under the Confucian principle of sorting primary and secondary matters.
Weighing what matters in life and death: Physicians anchor the root of treatment with holistic awareness
Life is the foundational origin of human civilization, and the clinical treatment scenario most vividly demonstrates the Confucian wisdom of distinguishing priorities and making choices. In clinical practice, multiple coexisting illnesses and complications are the norm. A patient often suffers from concurrent respiratory, circulatory, neurological, skeletal, visceral and other ailments. Test results and imaging reports will present a flood of positive indicators and abnormal findings.
AI can fully ingest medical knowledge databases, accurately identify, and list every lesion and abnormal indicator one by one, treating every illness and every set of data equally and presenting all problems indiscriminately. However, it cannot independently stratify risk levels or judge treatment priorities. The machine sees all details, yet cannot grasp the urgency of life and death.
The core modern emergency principle — “save life first, treat injuries later; prioritize severe conditions over minor ones”, alongside the ABCDE assessment framework, is the practical embodiment of Confucian thought on prioritization and choice. Patency of the airway, normal breathing, and stable blood circulation form the fundamental foundation sustaining life, the primary objective of all treatment. By contrast, nerve damage, skeletal trauma, skin wounds, chronic inflammation and similar issues are secondary details, which can be addressed gradually once vital signs stabilize.
Faced with the same patient, AI spreads all illnesses out evenly without weighting severity. In contrast, physicians rely on uniquely human holistic awareness and life reflection to make active choices, anchor the core goal, prioritize protecting the source of life, and defer secondary complications.
Many people harbor anxiety that AI will replace doctors and overturn the medical industry, yet they fail to see this fundamental difference between humans and machines. AI is an exquisitely precise auxiliary tool tasked with exhausting information, replicating data, and displaying details. The core decision-making power to distinguish life-or-death priorities, grasp the proper measure of treatment, and safeguard the root of life always rests in human hands.
Human-AI collaboration in the medical field fully proves: data can be enumerated exhaustively, details can be replicated completely, but the life wisdom to distinguish primary and secondary, uphold the fundamental, and know when to choose and when to let go belongs exclusively to humankind.
Eastern and Western Aesthetics: Choosing Primary and Secondary Elements in Artistic Creation
The Confucian wisdom of distinguishing priorities, understanding negative space, and knowing when to relinquish is not confined to life-or-death clinical scenarios. It runs through thousands of years of human artistic lineage, forming the unique core of human creation and an impenetrable creative barrier for AI.
The philosophical idea of negative space in Eastern aesthetics is the most classic manifestation of this principle of priorities. Qi Baishi’s timeless masterpiece Frogs Croaking from a Mountain Spring Ten Li Away pushes the Eastern artistic conception of balancing solidity and void to the extreme. The title directly points to the core subject: the croaking of frogs and the mood of mountain springs. Yet when painting, Qi Baishi made a deliberate artistic choice: he never painted a single frog in the frame. Instead, with only a few simple strokes, he sketched surging mountain springs, gurgling streams, and tadpoles drifting along the current, swimming playfully.
Visually, the painting only shows running water and tadpoles; there are no frogs and no sound. Still, viewers can draw boundless associations: within the mountain valley, frog croaks rise one after another, drifting along the ten-li stream across mountain ridges, blending with the sound of running water, insect chirps, and the atmosphere of the wilderness.
What we see are streams and tadpoles; what we do not see is the grand scene of frogs croaking across the wilderness and mountain streams flowing. The painting abandons the superficial, concrete, secondary “image of frogs”, safeguarding the artistic core of mood, poetry and vitality. It depicts the void through tangible forms, using small details to evoke vast meaning, achieving the realm of imagery beyond the frame, implication beyond the painting, and delight beyond the scene — the supreme state of Eastern art where “silence speaks louder than sound”.
AI painting only seeks to fill the frame completely, with abundant objects and dense details. It does not understand choice, negative space, or the advanced wisdom of “setting aside concrete forms to preserve artistic conception”. A machine can paint perfect frogs and lifelike landscapes, but it cannot depict the ethereal poetry of frog croaks stretching for ten li. It cannot voluntarily abandon complete objects for the sake of protecting the core artistic conception.
Guided by this shared creative philosophy, my small painting Where Are You Going inherits the Eastern tradition of prioritizing primary and secondary elements, negative space, and the interplay of solidity and void. The frame centers on the tender poetry of a child watching tadpoles by the water and the philosophical core of the origin of life. The frog figure is intentionally omitted; limited tangible scenes leave infinite room for imagination, hiding poetry and questions within blank space. Relying on uniquely human aesthetic awareness and judgment of priorities, the work gains its soul — a logic of humanistic creation that algorithms can never replicate.
Western classical art also bears witness to the truth of prioritization and choice. Rodin’s Portrait of Balzac is the ultimate model of abandoning trivial details to preserve the whole essence. The sculpture originally featured a pair of vivid, lifelike hands, yet these local details were so eye-catching that they overshadowed the core of the work: Balzac’s character, bearing and spiritual temperament, becoming redundant distractions that obscured the main subject. Rodin resolutely smashed the perfect hands, letting go of the striking secondary part, solely to preserve the spiritual core and artistic subject carried by the work.
This artistic choice of “discarding the trivial to uphold the essential, choosing with restraint” resonates deeply with Confucian thought of considering the overall situation and knowing moderation. The foundational principle of Western painting “better less than more”, and the core idea of “less is more” in modern design, share the same underlying logic: strip away redundancy, focus on the core, and separate primary from secondary.
AI can generate all artistic imagery with high precision and replicate every painting detail, crafting flawlessly rendered visuals. Still, it cannot independently distinguish the core artistic conception from secondary details, nor protect the spiritual essence of the work. It cannot voluntarily abandon perfect redundant parts. The creative wisdom of aesthetic choice, preserving mood through blank space, and discriminating priorities is a human-exclusive humanistic barrier that algorithms cannot break.
Breaking the deadlock: Dismantling the binary thinking fallacy of AI doomsday theories
The globally prevalent narrative that “AI will wipe out humanity” essentially stems from the shackles of Western traditional binary oppositional thinking. This black-and-white zero-sum logic defines all relationships as competition, replacement, and swallowing by the stronger. It assumes development must fill every space and exhaust every detail, rejecting choice, negative space, and the distinction between primary and secondary.
People use this narrow mindset to deduce human-AI relations: the greater AI’s computing power and the wider its coverage, the more space it will seize from humans, inevitably replacing humanity entirely and ending human civilization. This cognitive fallacy mirrors the creative logic of Western classical realistic painting: striving to fill the canvas without gaps, laying out every detail, delivering all information and answers at once, without choice, negative space, or extended artistic conception — completely lacking holistic, prioritized thinking.
Against the Eastern philosophy of Confucian prioritization, preservation of essence, choice and blank space, this modern cognitive trap can be thoroughly dismantled. The human-AI relationship is never a zero-sum contest for space and dominance, nor is there an inevitable outcome where AI engulfs humanity or technology replaces humanity.
Western binary thinking sees “competition and replacement”; Confucian wisdom of priorities sees “division of labor and symbiosis”. Machines excel at filling, replicating and exhausting details; humans excel at discrimination, choice, and upholding the fundamental. The two complement each other and coexist, rather than destroying one another.
Closing Remarks: Humanity as the foundation, technology as the tool — perpetual renewal guards the continuity of human civilization
Looking at the core Confucian ideas of “perpetual renewal, upholding the fundamental, distinguishing primary and secondary, knowing when to choose”, we can pierce the fog of all contemporary debates about human-AI rivalry and anchor the ultimate answer for the continuity of human civilization.
The essence of human-AI symbiosis is the coordinated advancement of tools and inner purpose. As an extension carrier of human civilization, AI undertakes auxiliary functions of standardized computation, detail replication and massive deduction. Nurtured by the thousand-year Confucian lineage, humans retain the core capacity for holistic assessment, priority discrimination, value choice, and artistic negative space.
AI cannot possess human perception, value stance, or spiritual commitment. It will always remain a tool serving civilization, with no possibility of replacing humanity, ending civilization, displacing creators, or supplanting humankind. The contemporary anxiety about AI replacing doctors, creators, or humans all originates from one-sided thinking, confusing the root and the branches, and an inability to make choices.
We uphold the Eastern wisdom of Confucian moderation, priority discrimination, and the vitality of blank space. Taking humanity as the foundation and technology as the instrument, humans command the Dao while AI executes its techniques. Humans and AI complement each other and coexist harmoniously. Human uniquely spiritual awareness, value judgment, and the original aspiration of civilization endure forever. With the inner power of perpetual renewal, human civilization will never become extinct.
